Why the Transition from Early Steps to Kindergarten Shouldn’t Feel Like Changing Schools

In our previous article, we talked about one of the questions we hear most often from Early Steps families: What will the transition to Kindergarten be like for my child? Will everything feel new, different, and unfamiliar? It’s a completely understandable concern—any change in environment can make a young child feel uncertain—and we want to answer it with complete honesty.

The truth is that at Gimnasio del Norte, we don’t see Early Steps and Kindergarten as two separate stages that children simply “move through.” We see them as one continuous journey, built on the same philosophy, the same values, and, in many cases, even the same familiar faces supporting children along the way.

We see them as one continuous journey, built on the same philosophy, the same values, and, in many cases, even the same familiar faces supporting children along the way.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

The Same Educational Philosophy

Our active learning approach, where every child is the main character in their own learning journey, remains consistent from Early Steps through Kindergarten. What changes are the learning experiences and challenges, carefully adapted to each stage of development—but the way we guide and support children stays the same.

The Same Commitment to Social and Emotional Growth

We implement RULER, Yale University’s evidence-based framework for emotional intelligence, not only in Early Steps, but throughout the following grade levels as well. A child who begins learning to recognize and express emotions as a baby continues strengthening those same skills in Kindergarten, using familiar language, strategies, and routines.

One Community, Not Just Different Classrooms

Being part of Gimnasio del Norte means belonging to an extended family—our “Best Family Ever,” as we proudly call it. It’s a community built over many years in Valledupar, where meaningful relationships grow among students, families, and educators. The shared experiences, celebrations, and sense of belonging don’t end when children move to Kindergarten—they become even stronger.

A Team That Already Knows Your Child

One of the biggest concerns for parents is the idea that their child will have to start over with people who don’t know them. At Gimnasio del Norte, much of the educational support and understanding of your child’s development begins in Early Steps and continues into Kindergarten. The knowledge built over time moves forward with your child—it doesn’t start from scratch.

That’s why, when families ask whether moving from Early Steps to Kindergarten will feel like changing schools, our honest answer is: it shouldn’t—and we work every day to make sure it doesn’t. Our goal is not simply for children to “get through” a transition, but to experience it as the natural next step in a place where they already feel safe, confident, and known.

If your little one is approaching this exciting milestone—or if you simply want to learn more before the time comes—we would love to show you how this continuity comes to life.
